Can you believe it is already April?! It seems like just yesterday I was starting my new job, and now the year is almost over… Nostalgia aside, April is one of my favorite months for many reasons, one of them being National Poetry Month.
Now usually, this month feels limited to the library and English classrooms, but this year I am determined to bring it into my technology classrooms. Technology has opened the door to possibilities for students interacting with poems and even creating their own. So, in an effort to celebrate this month in a tech-savvy way, I’ve put together a list of 10 ways to use technology with poetry in your own classroom:
- Have students create a Pinterest board about their favorite poet.
- Have students use Google Story Builder to create a video story about their favorite poem.
- Ask students to write a poem and then recite it through a podcasting tool like PodBean. Then allow students to present them or play them on separate devices as an audio poetry gallery for other classes or even parents!
- Create a classroom poetry blog where students can share their poetry with each other and comment and critique each other’s work.
- Use GoogleForms or SurveyMonkey to create a fill-in-the-blank, Mad Libs style poem.
- Have students create word clouds of famous poems, and then use the 5 largest (most used) words to inspire their own poems!
- Ask students to create their Voki avatars for famous poets as introductions before reading that poet’s work.
- Have students create mashups with Weavly as video trailers to famous poems.
- Use a venn diagram tool to compare and contrast two poems as a class.
- Create a fake trading card for a famous poet.
