Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of grant-writing and proposal pitching to raise some funds for new technology initiatives I want to launch in the fall. In the process of this, I’ve had to brush back up on my basic grammar skills. While I’ve had enough schooling to recognize active and passive voice, nothing makes my life easier in these situations than Hemingway.
Hemingway is a free, online app that quickly checks your writing for the following basic grammatical issues:
- Passive voice
- Lengthy, complex sentences
Each type of error is highlighted in a different color, to make it easier on the viewer to catch and categorize issues:
While I don’t always use it religiously, it is a really nice way to get an at-a-glance look at my writing, and could prove very useful in the classroom! Share this resource with students for at-home use before submitting papers, or talk it through in class as a mechanism for editing. Either way, this quick check is a powerful way to take a step-back and revise.
Happy editing, y’all!
