President Joe Biden escalated his attacks on Republicans over abortion rights in a speech to Democratic activists late Thursday, addressing the specifics of what he contends his opponents want: an expansion of abortion bans before many women know they\u2019re pregnant, and an attempt to to pass a national ban, which he pledged to veto.<\/p>\n

Leaning into the Supreme Court\u2019s overturning of abortion rights this summer, the president suggested there would be a surge of voter activity in the fall midterm elections pushing back against the high court\u2019s decision. Biden reiterated that abortion could be just the start of Republican attempts to dial back rights, including contraception and same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n

\u201cRepublicans don\u2019t have a clue about the power of women,\u201d Biden told the gathering of Democratic Party committee members at their meeting in suburban Maryland. \u201cLet me tell you something: They\u2019re about to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Already, the abortion issue in special elections has led to a burst of women registering to vote and to an elevated turnout, according to election analysts. Democrats are counting on backlash to the Dobbs<\/i> decision \u2014 which overturned Roe v. Wade <\/i>\u2014 to counter the headwinds caused by high inflation and a sour national mood.<\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s remarks about abortion came as he works through refining a midterm stump speech full of increasingly sharp-edged digs at the GOP. At one point on Thursday, he briefly mocked a Republican lawmaker who voted against his policies on everything from health care to infrastructure projects \u2014 including roads and bridges \u2014 only to return home and tout to voters the fruits of Democrats\u2019 labor.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see them out there: \u2018And now we\u2019re going to build this new bridge here. We\u2019re all for it. And by the way, this new road\u2019 \u2026\u201d Biden teased. \u201cI love \u2019em, man. They ain\u2019t got no shame.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, he also continued to draw a distinction<\/a> between \u201cextreme MAGA Republicans,\u201d who he said \u201cembrace political violence,\u201d and moderate Republicans he has labeled as mainstream.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s still a few of them left,\u201d Biden said of the latter group.<\/p>\n

Turning to abortion, Biden said that in 14 states the procedure is unavailable after six weeks of pregnancy \u2014in some places with no exceptions for rape and incest. Another 13 states could soon follow suit, the president warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn just weeks and months, more than half of America will have banned abortion if we don\u2019t win in this off-year election. And they\u2019re not going to stop there,\u201d he said, suggesting Republicans would try to pass a national ban if they controlled both the House and Senate.<\/p>\n

Some Republicans, including former Vice President Mike Pence, have pushed for such a ban<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they had their way, they\u2019d come after contraception and marriage equality, the whole right to privacy. \u2026 We can\u2019t let that happen, either,\u201d Biden said. \u201cDemocrats won\u2019t let that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
