If the roadway is being used as a street\u2014a platform for local destinations\u2014then it needs to be designed as a place for people, not a place to move cars quickly through.<\/a><\/p>\nThose in our government, at both the state and federal levels, have also started to use the word \u201cequity\u201d when talking about transportation. Before spending time in Michael Weilert\u2019s neighborhood, with people who mourned his loss, I did not understand the connection. Now, I do. We can\u2019t keep using the places that poor people live in as highways for wealthier people to move through quickly. It\u2019s inequitable to have a state route in the middle of Michael Weilert\u2019s neighborhood. Redesign it as a street.<\/p>\n
