A federal judge on Thursday temporarily blocked the Biden administration from\u00a0ending a Trump-era policy<\/a>\u00a0designed to restrict immigration at the southern border.<\/p>\n U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk for the Northern District of Texas said in his decision that he would put on hold termination of the policy that required people seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border, primarily from Central America, to wait in Mexico while their claims were decided, \u201cuntil the Court can resolve the merits of Plaintiffs\u2019 claims.\u201d<\/p>\n Kacsmaryk\u2019s ruling marks a setback for President Joe Biden, whose administration first sought to end the \u201cRemain in Mexico\u201d policy, formally known as the Migrant Protection Protocols, when he took office in January 2021.<\/p>\n The judge’s decision comes after the\u00a0Supreme Court<\/a>\u00a0in June said in a\u00a05-4 ruling<\/a>\u00a0that the Biden administration had acted properly in seeking to end the policy, reversing a federal appeals court ruling that\u00a0rejected a fresh attempt<\/a>\u00a0to end the policy in October 2021. The administration was previously forced to reinstate the policy after\u00a0Texas and Missouri sued<\/a>.<\/p>\n Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who\u2019d filed suit to block the policy from being lifted, praised the judge’s order\u00a0on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n
